Profile

I have 25 years experience of full stack software development, using a broad set of languages and technologies, but specialising in Python and all core web technologies.

I focus on high quality code that creates efficient and maintainable solutions to meet business needs. My experience includes lead developer teams and communicating with stakeholders across diverse business sectors.

Involvement in the Open Source world is an integral part of my approach to programming. This has included being one of the core developers of Django, and authoring or contributing to many other projects.

Career history

Datapane / Stackhut

Senior Software Engineer

Datapane was an early stage startup which used Python, Django, PostgreSQL and a stack of frontend web technologies. My role involved Django full stack/backend development, iterating quickly on different business ideas, and contributing to architectural decisions.

Self employed

Freelance developer

As a freelance web developer over a long period of time, I had a few long-term clients, including:

  • Market Access Transformation 2019-2022, Lead Backend Developer.

I developed their existing “Rapid Payer Response” platform using a Django/DRF/Postgres based backend, with a focus on:

    • improving patterns and existing tech debt issues
    • overhauling database schema to support business complexities
    • fixing performance issues
    • mentoring the more junior developers
  • Wolf and Badger 2012-2019, sole developer/team leader.

As a full stack developer, I took their existing e-commerce Django site and added a large amount of functionality, as their system evolved into a designer market-place with more than 100% YOY growth for several years. I worked with graphic designers to realise designs in CSS, did lots of open-ended product work and problem solving, and later lead a team of developers.

  • Cardiff University 2008-2011. Contracted for help with their Django-based CMS system
  • Federal Mogul (automotive divisions based in Bradford/Nuremberg) 2002-2004.

Designed and implemented internal tools using Excel/VBA/SQL, including all business process analysis

During this time, I was also doing charitable work:

  • Work with a UK Christian charity
    • based in the UK since 2021
    • living in Eurasia with my family (2016-2021)
  • Assistant pastor of a church in Bradford, Yorkshire (2008-2016)
