LIFE - Who needs it?

"... that you may believe that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, and that by believing you may have life in his name." (John 20:31).

is a series of talks being put on by the Cambridge Intercollegiate Christian Union to present Jesus' claims to students in Cambridge. The main speaker will be Mike Cain, who will talk from John's gospel .

In his first chapter, John claims that there was one who 'was God' and who 'was in the beginning with God'. He goes on to say that this one, the Word, 'became flesh and dwelt among us'. The staggering claim being made about Jesus is that he is God, and he came as a man to make God known to us.

But Jesus came to a hostile world: each of us is naturally an enemy and a rebel. In his crucifixion and death, Jesus took the full penalty of our rebellion upon himself, and so, having been raised from the dead, Jesus is now able to restore us into a right relationship with God. According to him, this is what true life is -- knowing God. And this is the amazing good news that Christians have to share -- that by believing in Jesus we can know eternal life -- starting now, lasting forever. In the words of John:

He who believes in the Son has everlasting life; and he who does not believe the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God abides on him. (John 3:36)

This means that without Jesus, we are in fact dead. That is why these talks are entitled " - who needs it?". According to Jesus' verdict, we all do.

Do come along to the talks and discover that new life is essential, and how it is possible. Ian Hamilton will be giving three lunchtime talks, Tuesday to Thursday, looking at objections people have to the Christian faith. Mike Cain will be speaking on the good news about Jesus Christ in the evenings from Friday to Sunday.
