Introduction
Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your
law.
Every Christian needs to be meditating and feeding on God's word,
and it is almost impossible to do so without memorising verses and
passages. On this site I have put together a serious of schemes of
Bible verses and passages to learn.
Choosing verses to learn
- Christians need to know how to behave, but also need to know why
to behave that way. The law cannot provide motivation by
itself—we need the gospel. What we believe about God and the
gospel is of first importance—everything else flows from
that.
- Scripture is also full of passages and verses that are fuel for our
worship and adoration, and help us to give expression to our
praise, and we should make a habit of learning these.
- Christians should also know verses that help them to share their
faith.
- In order to help general reading and understanding of
the Bible, Christians need the big picture of the whole Bible and of
individual books.
With these principles in mind, a large number
of topics have been drawn up, and a series
of memorisation schemes have been
designed that give a good balance of these different topics. On
the individual scheme pages, you can keep track of which verses you
have learnt if you register (using the 'Register' button above).
How to learn
Having decided on a set of verses to learn, it really helps to have
a system for learning them.
The Charlotte
Mason Scripture Memory System is one such system that works
very well and should enable you to learn a verse or short passage
every day. Below is a summary of how to use it:
- Prepare 41 divider cards, labelled as follows:
- 1 labelled 'Daily'
- 1 labelled 'Odd' and 1 'Even'
- 7 labelled for each day of the week
- 31 labelled from 1 to 31 for each day of the month
- Write each verse/passage to be learnt on a card that fits in the
dividers, keeping all the verses and dividers in a box.
- Learn a verse by repeating it over, with its verse reference,
until you can say it without looking at the card. Then place it in
the 'Daily' divider.
- Each day, revise all the cards in the relevant dividers:
'Daily' every day, 'Odd' on odd days of the month, etc.
- As each section gets 'full', move the oldest verse in the that
section back to a lower frequency section. What constitutes full
depends on your choice. A good suggestion is to have up to 6 in the
'Daily' divider, and up to 3 in all the others. For example, today
is Monday 24th:
- First I learn a new verse.
- I then add it to the front of my 'Daily' section, which
already has 6 verses, which I revise.
- I then move the back one in that section (which is the
oldest) to the 'Even' section and revise that section.
- There are already 3 in that section, so I move the back one to the
'Monday' section. and revise those.
- I move the back one in 'Monday' to the '24' divider, and revise the 3
already in it.
- The last of those 3 now has been learnt once,
revised 6 times daily, 3 times every other day, 3 times once a
week, and 3 times once a month, and it is then retired for good
-- it should be very well learnt by then!
Additional notes
- For larger passages, you may want to split it up into sections
that you can learn in one day. Keep all the sections in the 'Daily'
divider until you have learnt the whole passage, then combine the
cards so that they become a single item which move around together.
Contributing and copying
This project is work-in-progress, and I would value contributions
from other people, in two areas:
- Verses and passages to fill out all the topics.
- Improvements to this web site.
The schemes on this site have been put together using the help of
some computer programming. All the programs and the data used are
available for free -- and that means 'free'
as in 'freedom'.
